Violent Incident in Berlin Supermarket Leaves Man Hospitalized

Sun 8th Jun, 2025

A 66-year-old man is in serious condition following a stabbing incident in a supermarket located in Lichtenberg, Berlin. The attack, which took place on Saturday evening, has raised concerns but authorities have indicated that there is currently no evidence suggesting political or religious motives behind the violence.

According to police reports, the suspect, a 40-year-old man of Slovenian nationality, purchased a knife and scissors shortly before the attack. He first attempted to assault a 22-year-old customer outside the supermarket but missed, with the younger man managing to evade harm. The suspect then proceeded to stab the older victim, who was subsequently rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery. Thankfully, his condition has stabilized, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.

Following the incident, the assailant fled the scene but was apprehended by police shortly thereafter, near Schulze-Boysen-Straße. It has been revealed that he does not have a permanent residence in Berlin. Investigations are ongoing to determine the relationship, if any, between the suspect and the victim, and whether the attack was premeditated or spontaneous.

This violent occurrence echoes a previous incident from New Year's Eve in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where a homeless man attacked two individuals with a stolen knife outside a supermarket, resulting in injuries to both victims. That assailant, now 31, is currently being held in a psychiatric facility, with authorities suggesting that mental health issues may have played a role in his actions.

As police continue to investigate, they are working to gather more details about the motivation behind the recent attack, and the community remains on alert.
