Call for Action Against Substance Abuse Intensifies

Mon 9th Jun, 2025

In a recent address, a prominent health policy advocate has called for stringent regulations to curb the consumption of addictive substances such as alcohol and tobacco. Highlighting the urgent need for political courage, the advocate emphasized the importance of preventative measures to save lives and make healthcare more affordable.

According to the advocate, years of medical evidence have shown that factors such as availability, pricing, and marketing play a more significant role in determining healthy behaviors than mere knowledge or willpower. To effect meaningful change, it is essential to implement strict advertising and sponsorship restrictions for products harmful to health.

As part of these proposed measures, the advocate suggested that alcohol, tobacco, and high-sugar foods should be removed from areas where children can see them. Additionally, the distribution of flavoring substances in tobacco products and the sale of disposable e-cigarettes should be prohibited, as these products are often targeted at youth and carry a high potential for addiction.

There is also a call for the industry to contribute fairly to the costs associated with the health impacts of their business models. The advocate pointed out that approximately 150,000 individuals die in Germany each year due to the repercussions of alcohol, tobacco, and excessive sugar consumption, with related health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancers leading to an annual healthcare cost of around EUR180 billion. Given these staggering figures, mere appeals for personal responsibility are no longer sufficient.

The advocate stressed that Germany needs a comprehensive national anti-tobacco strategy and a robust action plan aimed at reducing alcohol and sugar consumption. Drawing comparisons with other countries, the advocate noted that places like France have instituted smoking bans in public areas such as schools and sports facilities to protect children from secondhand smoke and prevent the normalization of smoking.
